A graphical manager for bibtex databases written in java. Among other useful
features, it is capable of copying bibtex keys into the clipboard and can also
associate entries with .pdf and .ps documents

WHIZARD / O'Mega
|
This is the combination of the matrix element generator O'Mega and the parton
level Monte-Carlo eventgenerator WHIZARD. It is written in
O'Caml (O'Mega) and FORTRAN 2003 and is
designed to efficiently generate unweighted parton-level events for multiparticle
final states.

|
This is a nice and colorful introduction to the world of particle physics
invented by the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY. It even contains a little
flash game where you have to jump on vacuum cleaners (!), evade other scientists
trying to steal your time with a chat (!!) and, of course, answer physics
questions. German only.

Four video recordings of a set of public lectures on Qantum Electrodynamics
given by one of last centuries greatest theoretical physicists, Richard Feynman,
in 1979. It is deeply impressing to watch how Feynman manages to give a deep,
entertaining and at the same time completely correct insight into QED which is
fully accessible without requiring any knowledge about advanced mathematical or
physics concepts. I think it is impossible to overestimate not only Feynmans
importance to modern physics, but also his incredible talent for explaining a
complex subject in terms any educated person can understand without distorting it
or telling half-truths. In a nutshell: a joy to watch!

Another nice page trying to bring particle physics to the general public (also
managed by DESY if I am not mistaken). It doesn't try to entertain as hard as
KworkQuark, but contains additional
links to other media and material on particle physics. German only.

The G95 FORTRAN compiler
|
An opensource FORTRAN 95 compiler that is in principle capable of building
WHiZARD, although the generated code is
slower by at least an factor of three when compared to the propietary Intel
compiler (at least it was the last time I
checked). A fork called gfortran is also integrated into and distributed with gcc
4.x

Gentoo is a very flexible linux distribution built around the powerful package
managment system portage. It features rolling updates and the compilaton of
packages from source, allowing for a high degree of customization.

O'Caml
|
O'Caml is a programming language that combines a functional programming style
with imperative and objectoriented elements. It is the language in which
O'Mega and the
xhtml library are implemented.

PERL
|
Some people call PERL a "swiss army chainsaw", and I can only support
this statement. Nearly all physics I do on the computer involves PERL at some
point, be it batch running of codes or magling and twisting textual output into
exciting new forms which can be read back in by other programs. If you need to
write three quick lines of code which augment a histogram with statistical errors
and prepare your coffee at the same time, that's the language to use.
